At Jakarta International School (JIS), Open House connects our community with families searching for the best learning environment for their children. We open the doors to our classrooms and facilities to give them a glimpse of the JIS experience and the opportunities that await them as JIS Dragons.
“JIS is an amazingly beautiful space for learning and we can't wait for visitors to experience that. One of the questions that we frequently get asked by prospective families is what makes JIS special,” said JIS Head of Admissions, Kathleen Ngkaion.
“There are 1,001 answers to that question, but seeing how much thought and resources are put into our learning spaces is a tangible way of recognizing the value of a JIS education.” Ms. Ngkaion knows this first-hand not only as the Head of Admissions but also as the mother of four JIS alumni.
Taking the lead this academic year, the High School division kicked off our first series of in-person Open House events on September 27, followed by JIS Early Years and Elementary School on October 1, and JIS Middle School on October 6.
Visiting families were greeted by Student Ambassadors who later led campus tours, and members of the Parent Welcome team and Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) who shared insight on what it means to be a part of the JIS community. Guests were also welcomed by JIS Head of School Maya Nelson, who thanked them for choosing to explore JIS for their children’s defining educational experience.
“We know that there are choices in Jakarta. We’re honored that you’re taking the time to be with us today to learn more about our programs and to see if we are the best fit for your child,” she said. “We are very privileged that you decided to [...] see our beautiful campus and to meet our extraordinary faculty and staff.”
Our JIS administrators also had their turn in the spotlight, introducing parents to JIS’s school-wide values before delving deeper into their respective division’s goals and academic and co-curricular programs. Those who are JIS parents themselves opened up about what the Dragon community has meant to their families.
“This school has been such a special part of our family’s story. I hope you’ll hear today what it feels like to be a member of our community,” said High School Principal Lauren Pool, who has worked at JIS for 10 years.
As part of the campus tours with Student Ambassadors, our guests had a chance to walk through our school’s open-air hallways surrounded by lush green spaces and majestic trees. Along the way, they were shown the world-class facilities JIS students enjoy and learn from every day, including the new High School Library, the Middle School Jatayu Theater, STEAM Lab, PIE’s Makerspaces and Art Atelier, as well as our gyms and swimming pools. The tour also gave families the opportunity to ask JIS students and parents about their experience as Dragons and various aspects of our school, from academics to after-school activities.
Echoing Ms. Nelson’s sentiments, we thank them for showing an interest in JIS and look forward to welcoming them to our community as JIS Dragons!
