JIS Home/Online Learning High School

The goal of home and online learning is for teachers and students to continue to access the curriculum to the best of their ability through virtual support, realistic time-bound tasks, and high-quality feedback.

During this period of home and online learning, the high school remains committed to the highest quality of teaching and learning, and to nurturing students to be best for the world. JIS’ high school home and online learning framework includes a mix of educational approaches, methods and tools that suit the learning goals and needs of our students, while at the same time are tailored to an online learning environment. This includes using varied approaches for lesson delivery, ensuring relevant, meaningful and authentic tasks and assessments, and ensuring that all teachers regularly connect with students. High school teachers will use a mix of teaching strategies through blended asynchronized and synchronized methods to engage students with their learning, encourage peer-to-peer connections and maintain relationships within the learning community. The JIS high school experience will not be able to be fully replicated through online and home learning, but JIS is committed to ensuring that the learning experience continues to be designed and delivered well to ensure success and the growth of all students. We embrace this opportunity and challenge to continue to design relevant and engaging experiences and facilitate learning in line with our JIS Core.

Throughout our institutional history, community and family have always been very important to us at JIS but never more so than now. While we may be separated geographically from our students and from each other, we are still, and always will be, stronger together--truly exemplifying the JIS Core values and dispositions of being caring, resilient, resourceful and reflective.

Student Responsibilities and Expectations

All dates, days, and times refer to the actual time and date in Jakarta-Western Indonesian Time UTC+0700. For example, a task that is “to be completed by Friday, March 8th at 11:00 AM” refers to Jakarta time and not the local time where one is currently situated. Course teachers, as well as SLA teachers, will check-in regularly with students.

Students are expected to:

Spend the equivalent amount of time on a task as they would have done in class.
Dedicate time for learning that is comparable to a usual school day as or guided by your teachers.
Check all appropriate online platforms for information, assignments, and resources on a daily basis as per the teachers’ requirements. This includes checking your JIS email.
Complete all assignments while embracing all aspects of JIS academic honesty expectations.
Submit all assignments in accordance with your teachers’ expectations, formatting, timeline, and/or due dates. Home and online school days are still real school days.
Be diligent about submitting work on time. Teachers may grant grace periods to submit classwork and assessments past the deadline due to numerous factors. Simply stated, managing one’s time and schedule will be critical to academic success.
Practice good digital citizenship and ensure all digital work is regularly backed up to external locations such as Google Drive, an external hard drive, or a cloud-based storage system.
Clearly communicate in advance with one’s teachers and counsellors if you are sick or should special circumstances need to be considered.
Remember success will depend on a solid partnership and communication between teachers, students, and families.
Be flexible and resilient. Keep in mind that this process will not be perfect and, at times, could be messy.
Work to find solutions and seek help when necessary.

Student Checklist

Remember virtual school days are actual school days.
Remember all times and dates refer to times and dates in Jakarta.
Your teachers will post new information on the day your class meets by 7:30 AM Jakarta time.
Ensure that your work is done on time. If you have technical issues, communicate with your teacher via email or any other platform they may have specified. If you cannot reach your teacher try a classmate to find out what needs to happen. Again, be responsible and get things done.

Student expectations for Zoom meetings

Subject teachers will be scheduling regular weekly Zoom check-ins and office hours. Students are highly encouraged to attend these check-ins as they provide a time to engage with the teacher and peers.

You should accept the invites for the meetings you plan on attending.
Zoom meetings will be scheduled weekly by teachers via email, google calendar and/or Google classroom notification.
Please be on time for your Zoom meeting.
Consider your learning space and setting when participating in a Zoom meeting--A quiet, well-lit and comfortable space, such as at a table or desk, is appropriate.
Position yourself in the middle of the screen.
Look into the camera when speaking.
Ensure you are free of distractions (ie. siblings, TV, phones) so that you can focus on the meeting.
Be mindful of what can create noise in your environment when using audio.
Enjoy food and drinks at another time.
Inform the teacher if you plan on “leaving the room” early.
Make sure you are wearing clothes that are appropriate, similar to what you would wear to school.

Teacher Availability

Teachers will develop and post the home and online learning lessons by 7:30 AM (Jakarta time) for the courses that meet that day according to the corresponding letter day on the 10-day cycle.
Teachers will be available to respond to student questions and provide feedback during the normal amount of hours that they would during a regular school day. Teachers, however, will be given flexibility to adjust their hours based on the needs of students.
Teachers will be offering set office hours (on Jakarta time) as designed by the teacher for students to check-in virtually.
Students are encouraged to email teachers with their JIS email address, with questions at any time, keeping in mind that there may be a delay in the response time back due to other teacher responsibilities and timezones. Please note that due to Child Safeguarding policies, teachers may not communicate to students on personal (non-JIS) email accounts or social media (including WhatsApp). Teachers will be connecting virtually with classes at least once per week according to the master schedule, at a time designated by the teacher (on Jakarta time).
SLA teachers will continue to check in with students within their SLA’s on a regular basis.

Student Support Services

Parental Support for Students

High school students are gaining independence in their learning and the home and online learning experience is designed to require minimal parent involvement. Students, however, will still need guidance and support during this unique experience. Success will depend on a solid partnership and communication between teachers, students, and families.

Parents can support their child(ren) in their learning by:

Establishing routines and expectations for your child.
Providing an environment conducive to learning--establish a quiet physical space for your child to learn and work on his/her assigned tasks.
Helping your child monitor their class online learning environment and deadlines.
Encouraging your child to attend the regular teacher video-conferencing check-ins and teacher office hours on Zoom.
Talking to your child regularly and ask for daily summaries about their home and online school activities, assignments, successes, and concerns.
Reminding your child to communicate with their teacher should they need help, have questions or concerns.
Monitoring how much time your child is spending online and ensure that he/she is not being distracted by other online activities.
Encouraging physical activity and regular exercise.
Being aware of the range of emotions your child may be experiencing--stress, worry and anxiety. Seek out help from the JIS counsellors if needed.
Ensuring your child continues to socialize with their friends, albeit virtually.
Remembering that home and online school days are still real school days.

JIS Online Learning Child Safeguarding Guidelines

As with all learning both on and off campus at JIS our Child Safeguarding Policies and procedures continue to guide our practice. Please refer to the Child Safeguarding Policy page. However, due to the specific nature of online/home learning we have provided the following guidelines to support our educational practice with the shift to online learning:

When communicating digitally with students, only JIS approved modes of communication may be used (Google Classroom, JIS email accounts, Zoom etc).
Teachers and students will not be permitted to use personal accounts or social media (including WhatsApp) for any direct contact or communication.
Students may opt out of video options during online meetings. Students should inform the teacher ahead of time if they have a concern being on video.
Student 1:1 online meetings with any JIS employee/teacher will be recorded.

ZOOM VIDEO-CONFERENCING TOOL

During this period of home and online learning, JIS views the use of video conferencing tools to be important in our goal to continue delivering a high-quality education and ensuring that teachers and students can connect and interact together on a regular basis. Zoom will be used as the primary video-conferencing tool within the high school.

Key Terminology

Asynchronous

Class instruction, learning engagements, assignments and tasks occur via the online learning environment (OLE), without face-to-face real-time interactions. Teachers post lessons and assignments within the OLE and students engage in the materials and work at their own pace within a designed timeframe (as determined by the teacher). Teachers use a variety of ways to engage student learning with the lesson material and content, such as screencasts, webinars, podcasts, videos, blogs, documents, slides, presentations and handouts. Google Classroom will be the primary online learning environment with some teachers using supplementary online applications.

Synchronous

Class instruction, lessons and social interactions occur in real-time. Students may attend the class through video-conferencing and interact with the teacher and peers. Zoom and Google Hangouts/Google Meet are primary tools used at JIS within the HS for video-conferencing and discussions chats.

Online Learning Environment (OLE)

The online platforms where learning is facilitated virtually and where information, assignments, tasks and resources are located. Google Classroom will be the primary online learning environment within the high school, but some teachers may choose other options as well that were already in place within the classroom, such as Moodle.

Video-Conference

A virtual meeting in which teachers and students can stay connected and interact remotely throughout different locations in the world together. Video-conferencing platforms, such as Zoom, allow for interaction, screen sharing and chats.

Screencast

A digital video recording that captures action taking place on a computer screen and often includes voice-over narration. A screencast is an instructional tool that allows teachers to deliver lessons through pre-recorded videos that students can access at their own pace.

Instructional Delivery

Varied ways that teachers may choose to help facilitate student learning during the home and online learning period, depending on the student learning outcomes and student needs. *Not an exclusive list.

FAQ

How can I support my child?

We are all navigating challenging circumstances and the transition to online and home learning may be difficult for you or as a family. Now, more than ever, it is essential for the entire community to work together in partnership. As a parent, you may need to think differently about how you will support your child.

Routines are important. Help your child set up a schedule of when they will work on each subject. The schedule should follow the same times each day and include breaks.
Set up a physical space where your child will do their work away from distractions and where you can monitor what’s happening.
Monitor your child’s screen and computer usage. Identify screen-free times and breaks away from the computer.
Make sure your child is attending the scheduled class check-ins and office hours with teachers.
Sleep is important. Make sure your child is going to bed and getting up at times similar to what they would during regular school days.
Communicate with your child’s teacher or counsellor if you notice your child is struggling with school or seems stressed, anxious, worried or sad.
Make sure your child gets regular physical exercise and spends time outside.
Make sure your child is connecting with his/her friends.

What support will students receive if they are stuck with something they do not understand or have issues accessing online learning?

Students are encouraged to reach out to their teacher(s) if they are in need of any assistance. During this period of home and online learning, teachers are deeply committed to ensuring the success of all students. Teachers will have regular Zoom class check-ins and designated office hours for students to ask specific questions. Outside of these scheduled times, students with questions or concerns should email their teachers. The counsellors are also available for students to access. For technology related issues, students should contact the IT help desk.

How can teachers effectively assess students during home and online learning? How will feedback be given?

Staying aligned with JIS’ HS assessment principles, the primary purpose of assessment is to improve student learning. Teachers will continue to use a variety of approaches to assess students using formative and summative assessment tasks, ensuring authentic assessments and an emphasis on the learning process. Purposeful, timely and relevant feedback on student learning will be provided in multiple ways to ensure student success and student growth. Student self-assessment and self-reflection will play a critical role in this process.

Will students be given a grace period for handing in assignments online?

Yes. JIS realizes that this new home and online learning environment brings many challenges and stresses for families and students. Therefore communication is key to our success. Teachers are striving to be flexible and may grant grace periods to submit classwork and assessments past the deadline. It is helpful when students communicate when they are having problems or need extra time and help with assignments. That being said, students are highly encouraged to be diligent about submitting work on time. Students should contact their teachers if they are sick and cannot complete the assignments on time.

Why are online sessions still aligned with Jakarta time when students are spread all over the world in different time zones?

JIS is aware that our community is now spread across the globe within a range of varied time zones. JIS’ home and online learning model of asynchronous and synchronous learning is designed to ensure that all students can succeed. The asynchronous learning framework ensures the opportunity for students to learn in different zones at their own pace. It also allows for parents to support individual children at different times when there are multiple children in a family and there is a need for varied schedules. In addition, synchronous real-time engagements that support learning, and the social-emotional well-being of students, are being scheduled at times with a multitude of time zones in mind.
